800 Households Needed for Curbside Recycling in Fruit Heights

by Janet Thaeler on May 30, 2009

Fruit Heights needs about 800 households to sign up for curbside recycling if it’s to be cost-effective to have the program. Right now 350 have signed up out of about 1,400 households. So we almost need double that many people.

The city sent a card in the mail asking residents if they support curbside recycling (but 400 were returned saying they did not want to participate and 650 didn’t respond).

If we adopt this measure then the cans can be in place as early as July 12.

Cost? There will be a hearing to decide that on Wed. June 3rd at 6 p.m. at the district’s admin offices at 1997 E 3500 North, Layton. It looks like the cost will be around $6 a month.

I wish that I knew how to sign up if you didn’t get a card. The city web site is not helpful. Call the city at 801-546-0861

I would support curbside recycling in a heartbeat – but what the city is providing is just “green” waste recycling. Since we mulch all of our own grass clippings – we really don’t have any need for a can just for yard “green” waste. I hope that someday the city will offer a recycling program for the real waste in our home – plastic, paper, aluminum, etc. I wish they were working on this rather than green waste, which is biodegradable anyway.

Kirsten, I didn’t realize it was just for green waste. That is disappointing. I’m not as concerned about it passing. Have you heard of a proposal to do other types of recycling here?
Thanks
Janet
