November 1st was National Family Literacy Day and McDonald’s participated by replacing toys with books in Happy Meals from November 1-14, 2013. The print books are limited edition and encourage good nutrition, imagination and play. The promotion is in collaboration with Reading is Fundamental (RIF), the largest children’s literacy non-profit organization.
McDonald’s also went high tech! Anyone can participate online by getting their McPlay app and reading the interactive version of the books. There will be a new book each month through the end of next year. You can also read the books at HappyMeal.com. There are Spanish versions at McDonalds.com and MeEncanta.com.
In our family the toys don’t usually get a lot of play but the books stay around for months. I like that they are light and can be stashed in the diaper bag or my purse to entertain Alexis (2) when we’re away from home. She totes the books around the house too. In our house we love books!
There are 4 limited-edition happy meal books:
1. The Goat Who Ate Everything
Tells a story of a goat who has a big appetite and struggles to eat right. But when he does, he feels great and becomes the playful ‘kid’ everyone loves.
2. Deana’s Big Dreams
Shares how Deana, the world’s smallest dinosaur, grew tall by eating right.
3. Ant, Can’t
Features Ant, a bite-sized bodybuilder who’s big on encouraging physical fitness through exercise and eating right.
4. Doddi the Dodo Goes to Orlando
Follows happy-go-lucky bird Doddi who travels the world. She eats right because this dodo is always on the go-go.
