Going to Blickenstaff’s is like being a kid again. I kept discovering new toys and wonderful things.

It also felt a lot like Christmas.

This Utah toy store is located in the Riverwoods Shopping Center in Provo.

You can try out the toys (Bjorn has his eye on an EzyRoller).

They have rows and rows of candy (don’t tell Bjorn I’m giving him Fruit Striped gum and vintage candy canes in his stocking).

While you’re at the store, pick up their catalog because you’ve likely missed something you must have (for example, I’m going back to look at that adorable corduroy teddy bear in the window). Plus there is a coupon on the back for $10 off a purchase of $100 or more. I know what I’m using it for!

They also have a big selection of games of all kinds, dress up, dolls, science toys, and many wonderful things. And don’t forget to look up to see the train and other toys.

During December they’re doing a lot of promotions, so be sure to “like” Blickenstaff’s on Facebook so you don’t miss a single one. Also, be sure to pick up one of the holiday guides that tell you about the events that are going on at the Riverwoods.

One more tip: in the back of the store there’s a toy horse you can ride (free). If you have young kids they will not want to miss out! Check out all of the pictures our talented photographer Bryce Olsen took of our outing here.

It’s enough to make me want to move back to Utah County. But then I’d have to rename this blog to Orem Friends and it just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

Here are all of the bloggers who were there and had a great time:

I recently joined Utah bloggers for a tour of The Riverwoods shopping center in Provo. One of our stops was to La Jolla Groves. It’s one of several independent restaurants in Provo that I love.

It makes me want to move back to Utah County where there is innovation and quality. I think Davis County is starving for both. Like the owners of Communal, Chef Kent Andersen has more than one restaurant that feature fresh, locally grown, healthy food.

The concept of La Jolla Groves is lighter fare that is upscale but affordable.

Many of the dishes have a kiss of citrus flavor (but I must admit I didn’t see grapefruit as much as I’d like). Inside it looks like an elegant grove of orange trees. Every table has a single yellow rose.

Can you believe that the average customer eats here once a week!? That borders on addiction. Plus, over 600 women attended the cooking classes last year (which is now on my bucket list – they hold them monthly, call 801.224.5111 for details).

Here are my favorite dishes (of the ones we sampled):

BEEF TENDERLOIN MEDALLIONS – so tender, just the right amount and the flavors were perfect. So were the vegetables.

POTATO AND LEEK SOUP – a thinner, smooth, light take on this soup. I’ll never order it anywhere else or make it the same again.

OVEN-FIRED SALMON FILET WITH CILANTRO BUTTER – writing about this makes my mouth water. Again, subtle flavors and surprisingly rave-able.

I also loved the locally grown greens with the house balsamic vinaigrette that topped the stuffed mushrooms. Delicious. I want to go back and request a salad with that dressing. I could drink it and I’m dying to know what kind of balsamic they used. It was divine. By the time we got desert I was so full I couldn’t appreciate them, but I can’t rave about any one I tried (the chocolate one wins though).

They have a secret. On the side there is a carry out shop where you can buy the soup, fresh breads, and other items to take home.

Bloggers eat with their smartphones and cameras in hand! You can tell this picture wasn’t taken by Bryce Olsen, but you can see some of us.

Confession: I’m not crafty.

It’s tough to admit this as a blogger who is a mom and lives in Utah (scrapbooking capital of the world!) but I feel better now that I’ve come clean. I hope you still like me

Still, I want to save my family’s memories and that means scrapbooking (not quite the same as crafty, right?).

I’ve made two scrapbooks and here’s my issue: it’s a lot of work and mess. I buy the paper and the tools and the embellishments, stickers, stamps…and then I have to store all of it somewhere (there’s not a craft room in our house). The glue, the small pieces of paper, the glitter – it gets all over.

So I agreed to take a look at some digital scrapbooking software called MyMemories.

An Example of My Digital Scrapbook

I scrapped a brief overview of the past 3 years since Stephen and I got married. This made me pretty sentimental actually and Stephen loves it and wants to try his own scrapbook. I still need to show Bjorn. For some reason I couldn’t save this as a video, so I saved the photos to Flickr then viewed them as a slideshow, got the embed code and inserted it into my blog. I must be missing a faster and easier way to do this. It looks very easy to share on Facebook…

The backgrounds and layouts from the software didn’t really fit my non-crafty style so I looked online for backgrounds instead. I’m curious what you think and you may even get a chance to make your own digital scrapbook.

Enter my giveaway or redeem the special offer I have for you below to give MyMemories a try.

Harmons grocery store just opened up in Farmington, west of I-15. They invited a group of bloggers from Utah to take a tour. We were honored to meet Bob and Randy Harmon who introduced us to their staff and told us about their products. We got to sample so many things. Then we went upstairs for lunch prepared by Chef J. I’m happy and stuffed.

At the end of this post are pictures from our tour – be sure to watch the slideshow.

Enter to win a $25 gift card to any Harmons grocery store in Utah! To enter just make a comment on this post telling me why you love Harmons. I’ll randomly choose a winner using random.org on Wednesday, June 1st, 2011. Note: Contest has ended.

Philosophically Harmons is unique. They are not trying to compete on price. They believe in SUSTAINABILITY, ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE, HIGH QUALITY, FRESH, LOCAL, NATURAL products.

Bob Harmons motto: It’s only fresh once!

34 reasons you’ll love Harmons Grocery Store

They carry the world famous Creminelli brand salami in every flavor. Made in Utah by a 5th generation Italian salami maker who came to Utah for the Olympics and to ski and stayed. He notes that the climate here is so similar to Italy that you cannot tell the difference between salami made here vs. in Italy.

Harmons employees and founders are educated around the world. They go to Vermont to tour a creamery to see how cheese is made and all around the world and locally to source their products.

They make their own fresh artisan potato chips with no additives or preservatives (by the incredible sandwich bar made with their no no additive deli meats, bread from their bakery, and gourmet cheeses).

The Farmington store is one of only 2 Harmons that has a gelato bar with 18 flavors, made fresh each day.

The coffee shop carries Logan-based Cafe Ibis blends (fair trade).

The wok bar is made fresh twice a day from 11-2pm it’s fully stocked, then from 4-7 or up to 9pm they have a partial selection of Chinese food (no MSG, made fresh on site).

Everything in the deli is made from scratch, not from a can, box or carton.

Harmons meats are all natural with no steroids or filler. You can also find local lamb and bison.

Employees who handle food are restaurant certified and they meticulously monitor the salad bar and other food to be sure it meets food safety standards.

The produce is not brought in green to ripen on the shelf. It’s table-ready.

Their tomatoes are grown in Castledale, Utah in a greenhouse heated with thermal energy.

During growing season they bring in oranges from an orchard in California – farmer Ron delivers them to all the Harmons stores. Look for them in the mesh bags (only available for about anohter week, until Fall).

They carry fresh ground, organic nut butters.

You can get single portions from their deli – delicious lasagna, quiche and other heat and eat foods – great for lunches.

Isle #1 is kid-friendly meaning they have healthy snacks and foods (not candy) to tempt your kids.

The bread from the bakery is made each day with organic wheat flour. The wheat is grown in Utah then ground at Lehi roller mills. The dark color around the loaves may look like its burnt but its not. The crust is carmelized. It takes 3 days to make a piece of bread.

The white chocolate pecan bread is to die for and ideal for french toast. The garlic bread is divine with pieces of roast garlic baked in. On Fridays and Saturdays get Challah, a buttery bread baked in their stone oven.

The cookies and desserts are made with real butter (no shortening). The key lime tart has real key limes, not fake flavorings.

If you have any questions about how to prepare the seafood, just ask Rusty, she’ll help you. She told me the best way to prepare salmon is to put honey butter on it and bake in the oven! The honey caramelizes and the butter makes it so moist.

The fish is caught using long-line sustainable methods, then flown in the next morning!

They carry Sockeye, Cohe, King and farm-raised salmon (raised in the Atlantic). The King has a whopping 17 grams of omega 3!

If you buy shrimp from the seafood counter it is fresh with no additives and they will steam it for you so it will be ready to eat. Plus they make their own cocktail sauce that is so good (no preservatives).

Harmons has a line of seasonings and marinades from a local business called Cy’s. They have no artificial flavorings, no MSG, no preservatives or artificial color.

If you want a product Harmons doesn’t carry, you can request it (I already requested my favorite Belgium waffle mix).

The meat department carries sausage that is made fresh by hand each day and the meat counter has a built-in mister to keep the meat moist.

Chicken is a very serious subject at Harmons, left to the experts. They don’t bring it in frozen, it’s fresh. No additives or plumpers (nitrates, sodium, etc). They trim and wash the chicken so you don’t have to.

They have a bike concierge service! Bring your bike inside, they will park it and you can pick it up when you’re done shopping. Since it’s so close to trails you’ll see that many people bike to Harmons (some with kids in the bike trailer). No need to park it in the rain or sun or even lock your bike. They also have bike racks outside.

Their pineapple was once sent by boat and it took 28 days. Now it’s picked when ripe and flown in by jet. As I write this it’s on sale for a great price of 78 cents a pound!

They compost all of their vegetable scrap and a local business packages and sells it to gardeners.

They recycle (upstairs).

They have a dietitian on staff. Jessica will walk you through the store and help you meet your dietary goals whether you’re lactose intolerant, diabetic or just trying to lose weight. Reach her at JessicaLaroche@harmonsgrocery.com

Upstairs they have cooking classes including a kid’s class (a baby food class coming soon) and a 2+hour date night dinner.

Businesses and others can host cooking classes or meals upstairs and everything is made fresh by chef J. His email is Chefj@Harmonsgrocery.com

Harmons carries over 300 products from local businesses!

Now for the pictures!

We are returning from a few days stay at the Aria in Las Vegas. We love going to Vegas because it’s like a huge metropolitan city compacted into a few miles. There is always something going on whether it’s the comic book characters you can snap pictures with to impromptu break dancers. There is world class entertainment and food. In the case of Aria, there is art.

Check out the <a href='http://www.lasvegasdirect.com/search/aria.html?aff=1309057813>Aria Hotel“room rates and special offers.

I didn’t try the spa (we missed a $50 treatment during the twice yearly Spa Week by one day). The service and friendliness of the staff was good. A+ for the room service.

First I’ll start with what I love about the Aria hotel:

The amenities rock, besides the usual you get: a toothbrush/toothpaste/flosser and mouthwash, razor/shaving cream, and even bath salts.

A stack of gourmet chocolate squares in the evening.

Art is everywhere and it’s gorgeous. The fountain along the exterior is memorizing. I love the flowers and landscaping. The huge colorful canoe sculpture is playful. There is a gallery of Dale Chihuly’s glass art.

They have Kleenex brand tissues.

Remote controlled curtains and lights.

The fitness center is large & has headphones, good magazines, some fruit and bottled water. Not a fan of the smell of the smell of the perfumed air.

One of our bathrooms had a bidet. Heated seat and easy to use controls. This could almost fall under entertainment. Men have been known to sit instead of stand just to benefit.

The shower had a ledge where I could sit down and shave my legs. I always appreciate that.

Food at the Aria

After reading rave reviews and knowing the chef has won top honors I really wanted to try the Sage. Mistake. I didn’t like it AT ALL. Nothing. And it was very expensive. Instead I would’ve liked to have spent that money on the Chinese reflexology foot massage + neck/shoulder rub from the place across the street.

The cafe right near the casino is overpriced. The gelato is good. The chocolate crepe was too strong even for a chocolate lover. They accidentally gave us the wrong salad and we didn’t discover it until we were in our room, a far walk from the cafe.

Cafe Vettro was our favorite restaurant by far. A lot of nice hotels in Vegas don’t have enough casual dining. I don’t want McDonald’s (Stephen does though!). I want some fast serve, reasonably priced, good food. That’s what we got at Cafe Vettro. The scalloped potatoes are my favorite. We ate there twice. Great view and hip decor.

The buffet was decent. The Wynn has the best one, this one is a bit less expensive and pretty good. The fruit, ham, chicken with snow peas, and the garlic naan were my favorite dishes.

Room service was pretty good (except the table wasn’t flat so my plate was on a slant).

Entertainment

People on the street and street concerts.

The Chinese reflexology massage.

Movie theater near the MGM provides a lower cost, relaxing break.

People watching.

Shows – we like to see one per trip. We saw Elvis. It was decent. Look in the free magazines in the hotel for deals.

Shopping – this trip we got the deals, including a cardigan for $8! Malls are everywhere. We also look for Groupons from Las Vegas.

Too cold to try the pool but the hot tub was barely warm (it was a cold day too).

What I Didn’t Like About the Aria

There are some reasons I don’t like the Aria as much as my two favorites, the Wynn and the Trump. For one thing we prefer the south end of the strip. From the Aria it’s a long walk up and down stairs, and zig zagging around to even get across the street. For the price I’d choose my favorites.

We only tried a few places but most of the food wasn’t that great and super expensive.

I was woken up twice from people in a nearby room talking on the phone. In a normal voice. I was disturbed by the swearing and yelling by an obviously drunk man one night too. I’d expect that at a cheap hotel but not at a nice one.

What new thing did I learn while in Vegas this time? Did you know the MGM has a gorgeous mansion behind it for high rollers? It looks like a movie set – it’s a charming and beautiful Italian villa. At $5k per night or as an invited guest it’s for the jet set.

Now that I’m done with my epistle, I want to hear your opinion. Have you stayed at the Aria? What did you think?

I’m trying to decide what gym to join. I’m currently a member of 2 gyms (yes I should be in better shape!) I’ve heard all sorts of rumors about existing gyms in Davis County. There are a few new gyms that have opened up recently near Bountiful. I wish I had pricing on all of them but I put it in when I know it.

Here’s a review of some Davis County Gyms – the pros and cons. All of this is my personal opinion.

BodyWorx

1335 N 1075
Farmington Utah

I have a membership here. In the 2 years I’ve lived in Davis County it’s had 2 different owners. The newest owners took it from a family gym to more of a regular gym feel.

PROs: Close and within walking distance. My husband and I both like going. Excellent classes and decent day care.

CONs: Broken equipment that doesn’t get fixed quickly. AC is currently broken. Classes are crowded – come early or you don’t get in. The cosmetic and other changes seemed to be more important than the equipment. People in this area don’t hang out at the gym – they want to go in work out and leave. These issues are causing many to look for another gym.

Hours are short on Fridays.

Gossip: Owner is rumored to be on drugs and threw out his (former) girlfriend/business partner while she was in the middle of teaching a class (if it’s true, not very classy!). Whatever is going on it’s not looking promising. I’m not sure they will be in business if things keep going as they have been. Complaints have gone unanswered. This is the reason we’re gym shopping.

Curves (Kaysville location – can’t find on web site)

A woman only gym that has a pre-set workout in a circuit. No day care or classes. I have a current membership at $34/month (there is a signup fee)

PROs: Very friendly and personable, like a community of friends. Nonjudgmental supportive atmosphere, not like a regular gym. Close by. Efficient 30 min. work out that burns about 400 calories for me. I don’t have to think, I just plug in and go. I like that their system tracks calories and progress and that their machines don’t use weights but your own body resistance. Cardio equipment upstairs (I haven’t seen this at any other Curves).

CONs: Older demographic and not especially motivating. I worry that it’s not enough of a challenge for me. You are rarely out of breath unless you push yourself. The hours are inconvenient – they open in the morning then close and re-open in the afternoon. Closes at 10am on Saturdays.

SportsPlex

1188 SportsPlex Drive
Kaysville
Phone: 801-544-PLEX

I’ve only been one time to a community class. Very large, newer gym with basketball courts. I can’t really comment. I’ve heard its been through a lot of different owners.

I don’t recommend signing up for the weight loss program with Marci Lock unless you want to pay $5k + gym membership and protein drinks for 3 months. You’ll work out about 2 hours a day every day. Of course you’ll get results but who can maintain that??

Skills Fitness

We’re evaluating this gym. It is beautiful. Filtered cold water. Nice fluffy towels. If this location does well they may open another next to BodyWorx in Farmington in the old Bucco’s building (is that how you spell it?)

PROs:
High end look – this gym is gorgeous. Everything is new and clean. Steam room, sauna, and hot tub (separated into men’s and women’s) with nice lockers and even a swim suit drying machine. Day care. Affordable for all of the amenities. Theater room where you can work out in the dark while watching a movie. Lots of equipment and TVs.

CONs:
Only one main room for working out (which could get crowded). I don’t like the layout – there’s one main long hallway. It’s very linear and impersonal feeling to walk down the long hall to get to the cardio room. It looks like a hotel. A bit of a drive for me.

Gold’s Gym

I hate the way Gold’s Gym treats people. If you don’t have any issues with your contract you’ll be fine. If you have an issue (like they double bill my dad every month because they can’t get his health care benefit straight) then good luck! They could care less about helping you and quickly become very hostile. This has been proven again and again through the years at different locations so I will never join.

Neil Anderson’s GPP Fit

40 E Pages Ln
Centerville, UT 84014
(801) 294-7709

This is a very new gym. Supposedly Neil was a trainer and owner at another gym but there was a falling out. So he took his followers who love his workouts and started this new gym. There’s a lawsuit over it.

This gym is very different and much more expensive than any of the others. They hold classes all day and mix up the workout. Expect to be challenged. Expect to feel peer pressure to really push yourself. You have to think of it as a large group personal training session. There are set times and you show up and go through the day’s work out with Neil. You can check it out free for a week. So far I really like it.

PROs:
Incredible workout that is challenging and changes up every day. Works the entire body. If you’re serious about getting in shape, this is for you (unless you were in the Navy and hated to work out as a group – like my husband).

CONs:
No day care really – just a waiting area. Not fancy with a lot of equipment or like a traditional gym with different classes. A bit of a drive for me. $100 a month – which is the most I’ve ever paid. Far less than hiring a trainer and you can work out with a group any day of the week as many times as you want. Like Curves though, it’s not open in the afternoon hours.

Class Times

MON-FRI:

Morning: 5:00, 5:45, 6:30, 7:15, 8:45, 9:30
Afternoon: 12:00
Evening: 5:00, 5:45, 6:30 **No 6:30 class on Friday**

SATURDAY: 6:30am, 7:15am, 8:45am

Conclusion: I’m likely going to change gyms and go to GPP and Skills. It’s not much more to add me on as a spouse and it means Stephen and I can work out together. Plus in the Winter I like the idea of warming up in the hot tub or sauna. I think I’ll get better results by going with some friends to GPP – we can carpool and its motivating to have others keep you accountable.

Business Advice for anyone opening a gym with a business partner: get partnership agreements IN WRITING and see an attorney about non-compete clauses and the contract. Two gyms have had issues with business partners.

You know my opinion – now I want yours. What gym do you go to and why? Are you thinking of changing? Sound off in the comments section.

The Trump hotel is much better than I expected. I have to admit that I thought it was cheesy with all of the gold. From the outside it looks like a desert oasis in a concrete jungle of empty parking lots. There’s not much around it. Inside it’s dripping with jewels and gold and the letter T. It also smells good – like perfumed money.

Trump’s initial is on everything from the doors to liners of the wastebaskets. Even the control from the bathtub jets says Trump Towers on it. Stephen (husband) thinks they could have a game or contest for guests – try to find all the Ts. If you win you get a free resort pass (or spa pass).

The only strange thing about the Trump hotel are the elevators. They have a beat in them – like a heart beat. It’s sort of eerie.

I have to thank security because I was in a big rush to make Phantom of the Opera and somehow left my wallet and some shirts on a couch. I was sitting down rummaging through my bags for my room key and it fell out. They returned it to me later that night before I went through the panic of not being able to find it. Thank you, thank you!

Pay the resort fee if you want to exercise. If you pay you’re more likely to exercise. You feel like you have to get your money’s worth. So we exercised every single day. It’s a nice facility anyway and after the buffets you’re going to need to burn some calories. It’s really easy to put it off and never do it. Consider it an investment in your health because staying out late, drinking, breathing in 2nd hand smoke and the rest of Vegas isn’t helping in that regard (not that I do any of those things).

On this trip everyone got upgraded (thank you bad economy), which means we had a 1 bedroom suite. It’s gorgeous – from the stainless steel refrigerator to the 2-person shower. I’ve decided I need a desk in my bathroom with a magnifying mirror. Makes doing my makeup much easier – and surprisingly after being somewhat of a granola in college – I’ve found good makeup is the key to a lot of doors opening. Look good = get treated right by everyone from the cab driver to a stranger at a conference. The television is on the mirror and the bathtub is deep and wide (you can almost swim in it). The bathroom is as big as a 2nd bedroom.

We got a great deal on Priceline. Our room feels like a condo and feels like home. If our home wasn’t as nice as it is, it would be a let down to return.

Stephen and I are fond of getting room service for breakfast – and at the Trump – you should consider it. It’s essentially the same prices as the restaurant but you don’t have to be dressed. We ordered the fruit tray twice. I only wish they had an affiliate program, like the Marriott does.

Have you been to the Trump hotel in Las Vegas? If so, what did you think?

If you want to give your wife or mom a present that she’ll love, might I suggest:

A room at the Grand America Hotel – the only 5-star hotel in Utah – with a few of her friends. Book 21 days in advance and get a room starting at $159 (or see our special deal and the end of this post.Don’t forget to get a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie upon check-in. Also, enjoy gourmet chocolates with turn down service. See their web specials for details.

A spa treatment like a facial or massage (the duet massage is to die for and includes two people working on you at the same time.) We all came out floating. The therapists are amazing. Mine was also a fortune teller. He said, “you either play piano or you type” and later he exclaimed, “world’s biggest mouse clicking muscle!” The second the massage started I knew it was going to be the best one I’d ever experienced and it was.

Room service delivered to the spa of bottled lemonade, sparkling water and limes. They bring in a table with linens and a silver bowl with ice. There are champagne glasses, fresh lime and a rose. It just adds so much class.

A yoga class – the instructor was incredible and she gave us all a bit of essential oil at the end on our temples – it really added to the experience.

The entire day to read magazines (ok if I had anything to say that it’s glowing it’s to get more magazines but we didn’t spend a lot of time reading and Allison brought her People Magazine to share), enjoy the steam room, sauna and hot tub.

We had a great time and got to be better friends. We felt pampered the entire time.

We ate when we felt like eating. Slept when we felt like sleeping and talk when we wanted to talk (all the time we weren’t asleep). We got up late and ate well. We literally glowed by the end. Allison took pictures – check them out.

I’ve been to The Melting Pot fondue restaurant in Salt Lake before but this weekend was the best so far. The worst (sorry babe) was going with my husband’s work. The men didn’t like having to cook their own food. They miss the point.

The Melting Pot sponsored dinner for me and four girlfriends for a GNO (GNO – girl’s night out). Here are more pictures of us at the Melting Pot. We were there for 4 hours. We’re a finicky group. They accommodated us and we never felt rushed at all. We talked, laughed, talked shop. We ate lots of chocolate.

For the holidays they are running a BUY $100 / GET $100 promotion. Purchase $100 in Gift Cards and get a Holiday Gift of four $25 cards. Each one may be used quarterly throughout 2010. The offer isn’t available online — just go in or call 521-MELT or email tj@utahmeltingpot.com and order them.

Also be sure to sign up for their Club Fondue email list.

The Melting Pot is open extended hours for the holidays – from 3pm-11pm on Fridays and 11AM-11pm on Saturdays.

When you’re done walk over the the Grand America hotel and go to the teddy bear display. Bring a bear to donate and you’ll get a coupon for a Webkins in their gift shop. But what’s really amazing is the decorations, it’s just stunning.

There you go – a great night out.
