Did you know Utah is home to at least 2 gourmet cheese companies? There is Beehive Cheese and I just learned about Snowy Mountain Sheep Creamery based in Eden, Utah.

They design European artisan cheeses (available online) handcrafted from the famous French Lacaune, East Freesian and Icelandic dairy sheep breeds. Their sheep are grazed on Utah’s high mountain pastures.

Their handcrafted sheep cheeses consist of:

a camembert style brie

a rich and smooth classical bleu cheese

a hard rind Mountain Tomme

a smooth Danish style aged Fontina

They also sell delicate lamb meat available on the hoof locally or frozen lamb available for shipment year round. Fine restaurants buy their meat.

If you’re heading that way and call ahead you can even schedule a tour of the farm where they train students in their art. It would be a fun summer activity. I’ve never tried their products but hope to. I wonder if it’s available at Harmons.

Going to Blickenstaff’s is like being a kid again. I kept discovering new toys and wonderful things.

It also felt a lot like Christmas.

This Utah toy store is located in the Riverwoods Shopping Center in Provo.

You can try out the toys (Bjorn has his eye on an EzyRoller).

They have rows and rows of candy (don’t tell Bjorn I’m giving him Fruit Striped gum and vintage candy canes in his stocking).

While you’re at the store, pick up their catalog because you’ve likely missed something you must have (for example, I’m going back to look at that adorable corduroy teddy bear in the window). Plus there is a coupon on the back for $10 off a purchase of $100 or more. I know what I’m using it for!

They also have a big selection of games of all kinds, dress up, dolls, science toys, and many wonderful things. And don’t forget to look up to see the train and other toys.

During December they’re doing a lot of promotions, so be sure to “like” Blickenstaff’s on Facebook so you don’t miss a single one. Also, be sure to pick up one of the holiday guides that tell you about the events that are going on at the Riverwoods.

One more tip: in the back of the store there’s a toy horse you can ride (free). If you have young kids they will not want to miss out! Check out all of the pictures our talented photographer Bryce Olsen took of our outing here.

It’s enough to make me want to move back to Utah County. But then I’d have to rename this blog to Orem Friends and it just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

Here are all of the bloggers who were there and had a great time:

I recently joined Utah bloggers for a tour of The Riverwoods shopping center in Provo. One of our stops was to La Jolla Groves. It’s one of several independent restaurants in Provo that I love.

It makes me want to move back to Utah County where there is innovation and quality. I think Davis County is starving for both. Like the owners of Communal, Chef Kent Andersen has more than one restaurant that feature fresh, locally grown, healthy food.

The concept of La Jolla Groves is lighter fare that is upscale but affordable.

Many of the dishes have a kiss of citrus flavor (but I must admit I didn’t see grapefruit as much as I’d like). Inside it looks like an elegant grove of orange trees. Every table has a single yellow rose.

Can you believe that the average customer eats here once a week!? That borders on addiction. Plus, over 600 women attended the cooking classes last year (which is now on my bucket list – they hold them monthly, call 801.224.5111 for details).

Here are my favorite dishes (of the ones we sampled):

BEEF TENDERLOIN MEDALLIONS – so tender, just the right amount and the flavors were perfect. So were the vegetables.

POTATO AND LEEK SOUP – a thinner, smooth, light take on this soup. I’ll never order it anywhere else or make it the same again.

OVEN-FIRED SALMON FILET WITH CILANTRO BUTTER – writing about this makes my mouth water. Again, subtle flavors and surprisingly rave-able.

I also loved the locally grown greens with the house balsamic vinaigrette that topped the stuffed mushrooms. Delicious. I want to go back and request a salad with that dressing. I could drink it and I’m dying to know what kind of balsamic they used. It was divine. By the time we got desert I was so full I couldn’t appreciate them, but I can’t rave about any one I tried (the chocolate one wins though).

They have a secret. On the side there is a carry out shop where you can buy the soup, fresh breads, and other items to take home.

Bloggers eat with their smartphones and cameras in hand! You can tell this picture wasn’t taken by Bryce Olsen, but you can see some of us.

I recently got to try out the Tat-Toes nail polish stickers. Pat Mann in our neighborhood reps these and she brought some by.

You’ll see my before/after photo here. Notice that before I sorely needed to get my nails done but haven’t had a chance to yet. Then you’ll see my awesome new tattoos that I call “Scooby Doo” because they are like the 70s. I love them. I’m probably going to go for something more traditional for my fingernails though.

These are stickers that come in different widths. You put them on your nails, cut off the excess, then file it down to fit the shape of your nail. They should last 8 weeks. Pat can get you any design within a week for just $15 (less than you can get on the web site). One package should do 3 sets.

I have tried several things for my nails:

Nail Salons

Salons are the best because you get the entire experience of being pampered. But now that I have a new baby, it’s not always easy to go. Plus you’re looking at at least $25 every time you go get your nails done.

Glue on Nails

I tried these on my toenails and hated them because, well, they fall off. It feels awful to have fake nails in your socks.

Shellack Nails

These are expensive and look great. They also last a long time. But just try to get it off – good luck! You practically have to go back to the salon to have the polish removed. Too much work.

Conclusion

I’ve had my Tat-Toes for about 2 weeks and I love them. They look as good as when I put them on. I’ve been to the gym, walked in shoes with no socks, etc. and they have stayed put. Only the pinky toe one fell off the first day. I have had many compliments on them and am a big fan! Less expensive, quick to apply, and long-lasting.

It’s funny how the major grocery stores in town all sound like family names. Some with apostrophes, some without. Tough to keep straight. Ever since Harmons, the popular new kid, moved into town, there’s been some more intense competition for customers. This is good for us. My theory is Kaysville/Farmington/Fruit Heights is lazy when it comes to service and quality. Nothing like losing market share to motivate people to step it up.

I love that Harmons is social (on Facebook and Twitter) and the cooking classes, etc. However, they can be a bit pricey sometimes (the salad bar, ouch), but it’s usually worth it because the quality is high.

There’s been a lot of activity at Smith’s. They upgraded the produce section, the floral dept. and more. It looks nicer and they added a bulk foods and natural foods aisle. They’re also copying Harmons down the gelato and sushi (I like Smith’s sushi best, haven’t tried Smith’s gelato. Just try getting someone to help you – it’s a long wait). They have a ways to go with customer service though.

I noticed Bowmans has been cleaning up the store and upgrading the product dept. I’m so thankful because I can walk through the door and it doesn’t smell bad like it did (my pregnancy nose is extra sensitive). Bowmans will always be endearing because they have both senior citizen and expecting mother in addition to handicap parking. I try to take advantage of the expectant mother parking every chance I get. Plus they are very community friendly. It’s probably the store my grandparents shopped at.

Notice I don’t mention Fresh Market (link goes to an article by Leslie Mitchell of the Salt Lake Tribune about how the grocery store isn’t doing so well). Not even in the running and right across the street from Bowmans with the same parent company. Dumb marketing move.

Confession: I’m not crafty.

It’s tough to admit this as a blogger who is a mom and lives in Utah (scrapbooking capital of the world!) but I feel better now that I’ve come clean. I hope you still like me

Still, I want to save my family’s memories and that means scrapbooking (not quite the same as crafty, right?).

I’ve made two scrapbooks and here’s my issue: it’s a lot of work and mess. I buy the paper and the tools and the embellishments, stickers, stamps…and then I have to store all of it somewhere (there’s not a craft room in our house). The glue, the small pieces of paper, the glitter – it gets all over.

So I agreed to take a look at some digital scrapbooking software called MyMemories.

An Example of My Digital Scrapbook

I scrapped a brief overview of the past 3 years since Stephen and I got married. This made me pretty sentimental actually and Stephen loves it and wants to try his own scrapbook. I still need to show Bjorn. For some reason I couldn’t save this as a video, so I saved the photos to Flickr then viewed them as a slideshow, got the embed code and inserted it into my blog. I must be missing a faster and easier way to do this. It looks very easy to share on Facebook…

The backgrounds and layouts from the software didn’t really fit my non-crafty style so I looked online for backgrounds instead. I’m curious what you think and you may even get a chance to make your own digital scrapbook.

Right now I can’t say there’s a lot going on in Farmington Utah besides Cherry Hill and Lagoon. Of course we love both. But I’m excited about the new Station Park development. There will be a 2-story outdoor retail complex much like the Gateway in Salt Lake City. There is a central fountain that was built by the same designer who built the famous Bellagio fountain in Las Vegas (the one that has music, lights and moving water). It cost a half million dollars.

There will be green space and fun events during the warmer months. There will be hotels and conference space and a state of the art movie theater along with restaurant to draw businesses. It will be easy to access from the freeway, by public transportation and by bicycle (it is right near the trail system). That has always been an issue for me with the Gateway and the Riverwoods in Provo. You won’t have to drive to Salt Lake or Ogden for date night, we’ll have great choices right here. I’d love it if we had something for kids too (an aquarium, outdoor/indoor playground, children’s museum, etc).

The project is expected to be finished in 2013.

Harmons grocery store just opened up in Farmington, west of I-15. They invited a group of bloggers from Utah to take a tour. We were honored to meet Bob and Randy Harmon who introduced us to their staff and told us about their products. We got to sample so many things. Then we went upstairs for lunch prepared by Chef J. I’m happy and stuffed.

At the end of this post are pictures from our tour – be sure to watch the slideshow.

Enter to win a $25 gift card to any Harmons grocery store in Utah! To enter just make a comment on this post telling me why you love Harmons. I’ll randomly choose a winner using random.org on Wednesday, June 1st, 2011. Note: Contest has ended.

Philosophically Harmons is unique. They are not trying to compete on price. They believe in SUSTAINABILITY, ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE, HIGH QUALITY, FRESH, LOCAL, NATURAL products.

Bob Harmons motto: It’s only fresh once!

34 reasons you’ll love Harmons Grocery Store

They carry the world famous Creminelli brand salami in every flavor. Made in Utah by a 5th generation Italian salami maker who came to Utah for the Olympics and to ski and stayed. He notes that the climate here is so similar to Italy that you cannot tell the difference between salami made here vs. in Italy.

Harmons employees and founders are educated around the world. They go to Vermont to tour a creamery to see how cheese is made and all around the world and locally to source their products.

They make their own fresh artisan potato chips with no additives or preservatives (by the incredible sandwich bar made with their no no additive deli meats, bread from their bakery, and gourmet cheeses).

The Farmington store is one of only 2 Harmons that has a gelato bar with 18 flavors, made fresh each day.

The coffee shop carries Logan-based Cafe Ibis blends (fair trade).

The wok bar is made fresh twice a day from 11-2pm it’s fully stocked, then from 4-7 or up to 9pm they have a partial selection of Chinese food (no MSG, made fresh on site).

Everything in the deli is made from scratch, not from a can, box or carton.

Harmons meats are all natural with no steroids or filler. You can also find local lamb and bison.

Employees who handle food are restaurant certified and they meticulously monitor the salad bar and other food to be sure it meets food safety standards.

The produce is not brought in green to ripen on the shelf. It’s table-ready.

Their tomatoes are grown in Castledale, Utah in a greenhouse heated with thermal energy.

During growing season they bring in oranges from an orchard in California – farmer Ron delivers them to all the Harmons stores. Look for them in the mesh bags (only available for about anohter week, until Fall).

They carry fresh ground, organic nut butters.

You can get single portions from their deli – delicious lasagna, quiche and other heat and eat foods – great for lunches.

Isle #1 is kid-friendly meaning they have healthy snacks and foods (not candy) to tempt your kids.

The bread from the bakery is made each day with organic wheat flour. The wheat is grown in Utah then ground at Lehi roller mills. The dark color around the loaves may look like its burnt but its not. The crust is carmelized. It takes 3 days to make a piece of bread.

The white chocolate pecan bread is to die for and ideal for french toast. The garlic bread is divine with pieces of roast garlic baked in. On Fridays and Saturdays get Challah, a buttery bread baked in their stone oven.

The cookies and desserts are made with real butter (no shortening). The key lime tart has real key limes, not fake flavorings.

If you have any questions about how to prepare the seafood, just ask Rusty, she’ll help you. She told me the best way to prepare salmon is to put honey butter on it and bake in the oven! The honey caramelizes and the butter makes it so moist.

The fish is caught using long-line sustainable methods, then flown in the next morning!

They carry Sockeye, Cohe, King and farm-raised salmon (raised in the Atlantic). The King has a whopping 17 grams of omega 3!

If you buy shrimp from the seafood counter it is fresh with no additives and they will steam it for you so it will be ready to eat. Plus they make their own cocktail sauce that is so good (no preservatives).

Harmons has a line of seasonings and marinades from a local business called Cy’s. They have no artificial flavorings, no MSG, no preservatives or artificial color.

If you want a product Harmons doesn’t carry, you can request it (I already requested my favorite Belgium waffle mix).

The meat department carries sausage that is made fresh by hand each day and the meat counter has a built-in mister to keep the meat moist.

Chicken is a very serious subject at Harmons, left to the experts. They don’t bring it in frozen, it’s fresh. No additives or plumpers (nitrates, sodium, etc). They trim and wash the chicken so you don’t have to.

They have a bike concierge service! Bring your bike inside, they will park it and you can pick it up when you’re done shopping. Since it’s so close to trails you’ll see that many people bike to Harmons (some with kids in the bike trailer). No need to park it in the rain or sun or even lock your bike. They also have bike racks outside.

Their pineapple was once sent by boat and it took 28 days. Now it’s picked when ripe and flown in by jet. As I write this it’s on sale for a great price of 78 cents a pound!

They compost all of their vegetable scrap and a local business packages and sells it to gardeners.

They recycle (upstairs).

They have a dietitian on staff. Jessica will walk you through the store and help you meet your dietary goals whether you’re lactose intolerant, diabetic or just trying to lose weight. Reach her at JessicaLaroche@harmonsgrocery.com

Upstairs they have cooking classes including a kid’s class (a baby food class coming soon) and a 2+hour date night dinner.

Businesses and others can host cooking classes or meals upstairs and everything is made fresh by chef J. His email is Chefj@Harmonsgrocery.com

Harmons carries over 300 products from local businesses!

A group of Utah bloggers hit Apricot Lane at the Riverwoods in Provo last week (a Provo Utah apparel store for women). I’m thinking that Alison over at Petite Elefant could pull together an amazing outfit here (I think I need her as a personal shopper).

Apricot Lane has an amazing selection of reasonably priced clothes and accessories. They have a trendy, yet classic look (in other words it doesn’t look like it’s a mall shop for teenagers, but it’s not Chicco’s either). I’d call it upscale casual. It’s like a boutique but with a lot more selection than most and for much less.

They have some shoes, dresses, jackets, lots of jewelry (most around $20 or less) and belts. It’s one of the few places you could shop with your daughter and both of you find things you like.

I liked the necklaces because they had so much to choose from. Their Bonjour Belle jewelry was recently featured on Good Things Utah. I’m holding off on buying anything except the essential maternity or baby clothes right now because nothing will fit, but I did get a necklace. They have a lot of variety and the store is pretty big so you’re likely to find something that fits your style or goes with your new outfit.

I’m dying over the chandeliers!

Be sure to swing by some of the other shops at the Riverwoods while you’re there. I really want to try the pizza place next door.

Thanks for hosting us Apricot Lane. Be sure to check out Apricot Lane Provo on Facebook where they let you know about sales and new merchandise.
